The law has failed her; men have failed her, but I won’t.

“Every moment with you is precious time ticking life into my heart.”

Sofia (Tia)

The holidays are here, and I’m feeling hopeful until an anonymous text message arrives, reminding me of why I’m in hiding. I go by “Tia,” but that’s not my real name. I stay away from men, especially cops. But Theo—an attractive and determined detective—fascinates me. I’m afraid my desire for him might be the end of me.

Theo

The last thing I need is a distraction that takes me away from my recovery from a deadly wound. But as the mystery unravels around Sofia, so does danger, and so does my heart. The need to protect her pulses in me, becoming a priority. She’s mine, and I always protect what’s mine.

“Wait up, Tia!” I called out, not understanding the sudden shift in mood.

She paused and turned to face me.

I moved to stand in front of her. “Did I say something wrong?”

Her expression changed when I said I was a detective. I watched the color drain from her face. Did she have a terrible experience with one? Was she hiding from the police? What kind of trouble was she in?

Did I want to get involved? I had enough going on in my life, and I certainly didn’t need more baggage. But there was something about Tia that pulled me to her. I couldn’t stay away. How could I stay away from a mystery that yanked at my emotions—my heart? She had become the most intriguing—and the most beautiful—enigma to cross my path. It was in my blood to unravel this puzzle.

“Look, I’m sorry if I said something that was out of line. This may seem like prying, but it’s not meant to be that way. I’m trained to pick up on body language, and I think you’re afraid of something.” I made sure I left enough space between us. This extra space would make her feel safer.

She flicked me a sharp gaze, but neither confirmed nor denied my statement.

“I recognized the fear in your eyes earlier today, and I thought to myself, this girl is terrified. If there’s something you need, please let me know.”

Color returned to her cheeks. “I appreciate the offer, but I don’t trust law enforcement. Sorry.”

She left the room, leaving me standing there to wonder what had happened to her. She couldn’t push me away if she tried. I was hooked. Who was Tia? I had to find out, and I had the resources to do so.
